People, Language and Culture
People and LanguageSingapore’s resident population of about 4 million is made up of the four major races – Chinese (77%), Malays (14%), Indians (8%) and Eurasians (1%). The national language is Malay and the other official languages are Mandarin, Tamil and English. Most Singaporeans are bilingual, speaking both English and their mother tongue. English is the lingua franca and is widely spoken and understood.
In particular, Singaporeans also speak a peculiar brand of English called “Singlish” which mixes phrases from the many dialects and Malay.
